Our farming philosophy is summed up in our name, which is a play on words from the Latin phrase “terra firma,” which means solid earth. “Terra” is the earth part of that phrase, so we like to think of Terra Farma as meaning “Earth Farm.” We strive to continually rebuild the soil fertility on our property through multi-species rotational grazing, on-farm composting, minimal tillage, and protection of sensitive riparian zones. We care deeply about our animals and treat all of them with the utmost care and respect and we feel they return this favor in the quality of the products they provide for us.
We firmly believe in the power of properly managed grazed grasslands to sequester carbon in the soil, and are always willing to teach others how to maximize the potential in their land. We also manage our land for ecological and habitat value; for example, we drained a former irrigation pond that was having negative impacts on stream temperature, and we restored the riparian zone into a woodland of native trees.
Our meat CSA will run monthly throughout the year and will have regular staples of beef, pork, and chicken. Additionally, in a one year period, you can expect at least two guinea fowl and two rabbits, with plans to add goat and lamb in the very near future. Signups will be on a quarterly basis, $325 for a three month subscription. We also plan to include occasional bonuses, like bones for stock-making, rendered leaf lard, and other surprises. The on-farm pick-ups will often coincide with our pick-up days for our chicken and Thanksgiving turkey, if you want to add to your order. The North Portland location will be at the home of Funhouse Brews, a licensed nano-brewery that will be offering beer tastings and growler fills.
